5 Reasons to Start Volunteering Today

“Volunteers don't get paid, not because they're worthless, but because they're priceless.”  - Sherry Anderson

There is no doubt that our community is able to thrive due to the people who give their time and expertise, at no charge, to make our beautiful town better. Not only do they do this from the goodness of their heart, but many of them do it with a smile. What attracts people to volunteering in the first place? Why should people volunteer?

Here are the top 5 reasons to volunteer:

1. It’s good for you.

Volunteering isn’t just a good thing to do in general, but it is also good for you. Volunteering and helping someone other than yourself is reported to help a person’s mental health state by reducing stress and even boosting the immune system. Volunteering can also give your self-confidence and self-esteem a little boost.

2. Gain Experience and Knowledge

Volunteers gain often gain experience. Younger volunteers, like students, who want to pursue a career in a certain field can also choose to volunteer in that particular field and gain invaluable knowledge about it. By working with non-profits, you also learn a lot about how the government is operated. You will also have new experiences when volunteering which can help you become more well rounded in your views and opinions.

3. Make Connections

Volunteering can help people make connections. If you live alone or if you have just moved to a new place, volunteering is a great way to meet new people. By picking a certain place or cause to volunteer, you will also be meeting people who also share that same passion. Many friendships are built in the volunteering arena.

4. Gain Skills

When you volunteer, you increase your problem-solving, management, organization, and overall communication skills. These types of skills are highly sought out in many arenas of the work force and would be a bonus on any college application or resume.

5. Make a Difference!

Volunteering makes a difference! You may not be able to see the difference you make immediately, but by helping and giving of yourself, you should know that every person counts, and every act makes a difference.

There are numerous places throughout Mountain Home and the Twin Lakes area that would love to have more volunteers such as the Food Bank of North Central Arkansas, Serenity, and the Donald W. Reynolds Library. In fact, Baxter Regional Medical Center has over 400 volunteers and the Donald W. Reynolds Library has over 300 volunteers to help out! Our very own Mountain Home Chamber of Commerce is operated six days a week by VOLUNTEERS.

Whether you can give one day, a week, or a month, volunteering is not only needed, but truly makes a difference for you and others around you.
