The United Methodist Women of First United Methodist Church of Mountain Home are scheduled to meet at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, October 3rd in The Gathering, Room 205. The 22nd Annual History Day at Rapp’s Barren Settlement in Cooper Park will be held on Saturday, October 7, 2017. The Settlement will open at 9am and close at 2pm. Events for History Day will include: live music, wood carving, soap making, guest speakers, Civil War Artillery & Infantry Demonstration, and more. The cannon will be fired at 9:30am, 1:00pm. The Mountain Home Parks and Recreation will be hosting a Halloween Dance at the L. C. Sammons Youth Center, Cooper Park for youth in the 3rd, 4th and 5th grade, on Saturday, October 14th 2017, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Cost is $3.00 per person for youth center members and $5.00 per person for non-members. The evening will be packed with fun, including approved music and lighting provided by youth center staff, Costume dance contests, door prizes, free snacks and punch, a photo booth ($5.00 per photo). Event will be chaperoned by MHP&R Staff and community volunteers. The L.C. Sammons Youth Center will be CLOSED to youth activities due to preparation for the Halloween Dance. Arkansas State University-Mountain Home (ASUMH) will hold a week-long class called Ready 2 Get Ahead where students can earn a $125 stipend for attending. The class is scheduled to be held ​October 16-​20​ from 8 ​a​.m. - 5 p.m. and is geared for any age person who is looking for work or who wishes to move from entry-level jobs into higher-level employment. Students will earn a $125 stipend/gift card​ for attending on time each day​ and ​will ​hear from local employers. Classes will be held​ at St. Andrews Episcopal Church ( 511 Coley Drive) on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday and​​ on the ASUMH campus​ (​1600 South College Street​) on Wednesday and Friday.​ Students must pre-register by​ Thursday Oct. 12​​ by calling Amanda Herd at 870-508-6245 or Cindy Young at 870-508-6385. Coursework includes: Arkansas Career Readiness Certificate (CRC): A portable credential based upon the WorkKeys assessments. Demonstrates to a prospective employer that the CRC earner has the skills needed for 21st century jobs. Ready2Work: Define career goals and get the basic skills needed to become a successful employee. Topics include resumes, interviews, employer expectations, and more. Cooking/Shopping Matters: Learn to shop strategically on a budget and to use practical nutrition information to guide food choices. This programming is offered in partnership with the Food Bank of North Central Arkansas. Getting Ahead in a Just Gettin' By World: Designed to assist individuals and families achieve self-sufficiency, participants explore the impact of economic class on themselves and their communities as well as how to build financial, emotional, social, and employment resources. MH Business and Professional Women and Marvelous! Magazine celebrate the success of women in business every year during National Business Women's Week. This year's annual banquet presents awards to Brenda Allen, Women of the Year; The Salvation Army, Community Outreach; XL-7 TV, Pillar of the Community; and the Mountain Home Fire Department, Pride of America. The social hour begins at 5:30 pm followed by the banquet and awards. Food choices are made when you purchase a $45 ticket from a BPW member or at Integrity First Bank (main). Tenille Rauls, The Call, is the featured speaker. A silent auction benefits the Salvation Army.
